Looking at some of the broad points of this Deficit Commission proposal for getting control of the national debt, I am struck by how much of it is going to further screw the working American.
The removal of child tax credits and mortgage interest deductions merely add up to my having to pay more in taxes without the benefit of being able to call it a tax hike.
The raising of the retirement age...Granted this will most likely be implemented after I die, but it still doesn't address the money being flat-out stolen from my paycheck every two weeks of my working life for 55 years. Finally! Finally, Social Security is being called what it is: A Ponzi Scheme. How long did the government send Madoff to prison for? Life? I honestly don't remember. Kind of hypocritical, isn't it???
Higher income earners to receive fewer Social Security benefits because 'they can afford it.' Doesn't matter that you paid into the scheme for 55 years. Doesn't matter that you paid MORE into it because you made more money. Your higher 'contribution' is going to be rationed. You will get less so that someone else who wasn't as 'fortunate' in life can get more out than they EVER put in. And there is never any abuse of the SS system, is there? It's income redistribution, plain and simple.
A 15 cents-per-gallon tax hike on fuel. Just what we all need. We are back up to $3.00 a gallon here in Dayton-area, Ohio.
To be fair, there are also proposals to ban earmarks, cut government employee salaries (the number of government employees making $150,000.00 or more has doubled since Obama has taken office), and reform the tax code with a flat tax anywhere from 8% to 23%. The income tax reform would be better achieved with its elimination altogether. Tax what people spend, and everyone pays. If you can't afford to spend, then you don't have to pay the tax...Sounds "FAIR".
